Equine Somatics: Reclaiming Grace, Balance, and Connection for Horses

Equine Somatics is an innovative and emerging field that brings the principles of Living Somatics, Biodynamic Osteopathy, and somatic movement education into the world of horses. At its heart, Equine Somatic therapy honors the horse as an intelligent, sentient being capable of self-healing when provided the right environment, touch, and guidance. This hands-on modality is not just bodywork; it is a somatic conversation that reawakens the horse’s innate ability to regulate, re-pattern, and heal its neuromuscular system we see the horse as a living, sensitive, intelligent, and heartfelt somatic horse.
Through voluntary, cooperative movement, Equine Somatics helps horses reclaim comfort, fluidity, and connection in their bodies. Whether a horse has experienced trauma, injury, poor saddle fitting, or simply habitual tension from domesticated life, Equine Somatic trauma healing offers a profound and sustainable solution that works directly with the nervous system.

The Principles of Equine Somatics
Equine Somatics is based on the understanding that the body has a natural ability to self-correct and heal. Just like in human somatics, the goal is to restore function through neuromuscular education. This is not about forcing change from the outside but awakening inner intelligence through mindful movement and touch.
Unlike massage, chiropractic, or acupuncture, Equine Somatics invites the horse into voluntary, slow, and deliberate movement patterns. These movements originate in the horse’s motor cortex—the only area capable of consciously relaxing muscles. Once the horse rediscovers how to release these patterns, the brain "rewires" itself, allowing the body to move in a more integrated and pain-free way.

An Equine Somatics therapy session includes

• Visual and tactile assessment of standing posture and gait.
• Identification of habitual contraction patterns or asymmetries.
• Hands-on work to gently invite slow, voluntary movement.
• Pandiculation, or intentional muscle contraction and slow release, to reset the nervous system.
• Owner/handler education on how to support the process between sessions.

Each session is individualized. The practitioner brings presence, patience, and listening touch—hallmarks of Biodynamic Osteopathy and Living Somatics practices. Stillness is honored, allowing for moments of regulation, integration, and deep reset.

Pandiculation: Nature’s Reset Button
Pandiculation is the core technique in Equine Somatics. It is the natural reflexive movement all healthy vertebrates perform (like a cat stretching after a nap). In the somatic context, pandiculation involves contracting a muscle group, then slowly lengthening it while staying aware of the movement.
In sessions, practitioners assist horses through guided pandiculations. This wakes up sensory-motor communication and allows the horse to release chronic contractions from the inside out. As a result, the body regains fluidity without force.

Why Horses Need Somatics

Just as humans accumulate somatic patterns from stress, injury, or poor posture, so do horses. These patterns can come from:
• Injury or trauma
• Ill-fitting saddles or bridles
• Forced training or riding
• Inactivity or confinement
• Poor hoof care
• Emotional stress or isolation
Over time, these issues result in habitual holding patterns, reduced mobility, and behavioral changes. Through Equine Somatic healing, horses are given a pathway back to balance—physically, emotionally, and neurologically.

Somatic Partnership: Human and Horse

Somatic horse work is a relational process. The practitioner does not "fix" the horse, but instead listens deeply, responds with non-imposing touch, and invites movement through presence and connection. This leads to:
• Greater trust between horse and human
• More relaxed and receptive horses
• A deeper bond and communication between rider and horse
• Safer handling and enhanced performance
This work aligns beautifully with Somatic Yoga Flow, as both prioritize awareness, breath, and the intelligence of movement.

Roots and Development of Equine Somatics

Equine Hanna Somatics, founded by Dr. Eleanor Criswell Hanna, originated in 1996 and matured into a comprehensive field of study by the early 2000s. The method was directly inspired by Thomas Hanna's human somatic work and adapted for horses with exceptional results.
In 2006, the first professional Equine Somatics training was held in California. Brian Siddhartha Ingle and Gayatri Schriefer were both part of this founding group and graduated in 2007. Since then, Brian has continued to develop and integrate this work into the broader Living Somatics curriculum.
“The human-horse relationship is by nature somatic: It is the integration of two minds and two bodies, the mind and body of the rider and the mind and body of the horse... The result is a greater harmony between horse and rider, an interspecies relationship.”
